I work in a school with students from a variety of backgrounds whose learning levels vary greatly. Our population is very culturally and socially diverse. Many of our students are new to the United States and are learning to speak and read English.
Our school has an active library program.
Students come with their classes, and also independently during homeroom and their lunch periods. They use the library for projects, to borrow books, and also to attend book club meetings.
My Project
Our school library had a very active book discussion club last year. We met during lunch periods. Students in all grades attended regularly, but they bemoaned the fact that we did not have multiple copies of titles so that they could discuss the same book. Last June, the kids completed a survey, voting for various titles recommended for middle school book club discussions. The titles on this list represent their top requests. When their wishes are fulfilled, students of this age feel empowered, and they will be encouraged to read, because the books are of their choosing. The more they read, the further their language skills will develop.
