My students need glow sticks, neon highlighters and black lights for exciting and illuminating STEM close reading activities and formative assessments to help gauge their level of understanding important science concepts.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a K to fifth-grade elementary school with 700+ children in FL providing free or reduced lunch to over half of our students. Some of our students' families struggle financially so there is very little extra funds for relevant, comprehensible science investigations. To add to our population we were blessed to welcome many English Language Learners (ELLs) students new to our country from Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Their lives were significantly impacted by Hurricane Maria with devastating property damage in particular to their modest homes. Yet through it all we will all emerge stronger.
As budding computer programmers, mathematicians, engineers, and scientists, my students clamor for more opportunities to engage in computer programming and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) explorations both during and beyond the typical school day.
Our goal is to give each student the very best education and the best support possible at all times. Won't you please help us? We need access to resource books, kits and materials to better engage our new ELLs with relevant, STEM based reading and hands on learning.
My Project
Picture this: standing outside your classroom is someone who looks somewhat like the classroom teacher but it's difficult to be certain as she's hiding behind dark shades, a fedora pulled down over her forehead and clothing meant to conceal her appearance. In her hand is a cell phone, but not just any cell phone, it is also a fingerprint scanner (prank) that will only admit students who are "cleared" for entry. Denied students must answer a series of random content questions before gaining admittance by the bespectacled teacher/sentry.
Upon gaining clearance to enter their classroom, students must adjust their eyes to the darkened room aglow with only a blacklight, duck around and through "stringed" challenges, and cautiously find their way to their assigned seat and begin their mission/challenge while the haunting tune of the Mission Impossible theme song plays on.
Their challenge is a Very Important STEM Close Reading assignment. Utilizing the strategies they have been taught students will complete their close reads of the academic article, guided only by a glow stick and neon highlighter as their tools.
How do you make even the most mundane of academic reading material come alive for your students, whereby they all embrace the assignment? This strategy is 100% engagement! This is how I want to hook my students with Close Reading this year. Won't you please help me? The formative assessment probes will be used to later ascertain content understanding after the close reading and other content learning activities.
