Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are curious and enthusiastic learners. They attend a 6th to 12th grades Title I school and live in one of the roughest neighborhoods in our city. Despite these challenges, my students are eager to learn when provided with the opportunity and resources. Our school offers a safe space for them to grow and flourish.
This pandemic has taken away this safe space for my students.
My 8th and 12th graders are mourning the loss of their senior prom, senior field trip, and graduation. Those moving onto different high schools and colleges will miss their chance to say goodbye to their childhood friends.
All the while they are adjusting to the loss of space for socialization with their peers, many are also dealing with concerns about their family's health and struggle to maintain their means of livelihood.
My Project
Metamorphic rocks are formed when igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks, or other metamorphic rocks are subjected to intense heat and/or pressure. The intense pressure of tectonic plates converging upon each other, and the intense heat of magma passing over other rocks will cause it to undergo a metamorphosis that changes the mineral alignment within the rocks.
Reading about the texture, grain size, and composition of various metamorphic rocks cannot compare with having an actual sample to touch, feel, and examine.
These samples of slate, phyllite, schist, gneiss, anthracite coal, hornfels, quartzite, marble, and metaconglomerate will allow my students to relate the text and images to a tangible entity. They will be able to feel the texture and examine the foliation and composition of various metamorphic rocks. For the past 3 years, I have been rotating 6 samples of these rocks among my 30+ students in each class. These additional samples will give every student easy access to the rocks as we discuss their distinctive properties.
