Diversity and inclusion is the mantra that drives each member of our school's staff. Our students' ethnic roots span the globe; Turkish, Russian, Ukraine, Spanish, African American, and many more. Here we see every skin color and many dialects and yet we all come together to work for common understanding. This marriage of backgrounds expands into our curriculum. While we emphasize a strong scientific base we also integrate this with the arts and humanities. The artists become scientists and the scientists discover creativity through the arts. Many of my students struggle with learning, social and emotional disabilities. The economic background is wide and includes many students on the free and reduced lunch program.
At our school students strive to develop the intellectual, linguistic, cultural, interpersonal, and advocacy skills needed to succeed in a global future.
They nurture each other through clubs, after school projects, activities and a hope squad whose student members are trained to intervene for a peer in crisis.
They win awards in Robotics, host a yearly STEM fest, win art contests, display great musical abilities and last year our 6th graders beat out Juniors and Seniors in H.S. Utah Entrepreneur Challenge.
My Project
Art is a personal and individual process. Each student deserves a front row seat when concepts are taught. How can one teacher give 28 students in a tiny classroom a chance to see every detail?
Any art-making process is a learning curve and requires step by step demonstrations that allow students to see the end goal.
A document camera allows every student to see every detail.
Sometimes there are artist examples, sometimes specific techniques, sometimes just watching the art unfold is enough to bring about that aha moment and open up more possibilities for the students. Every student no matter where they are academically has to go through that learning curve and having that visual example is so very important for them.
With a document camera students are able to see every detail of the demonstration, every brush stroke or pen line in the artists example. I searched many document cameras, some a little less expensive and some quite a bit more expensive and I think I have found the one that will give me the greatest versatility for the price. Every dollar you donate will be very appreciated and will make such a big difference to each one of my students.
