Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Karina, Vanessa, Sunny, Dayanara, Yessica and Lizeth are the students who are leading this project.
When we come back from break in January, the 7th graders will be reading Mockingjay, the 3rd book in the Hunger Games trilogy, and using the dystopian novel to continue studying social justice ideas that they have been researching. The six girls who are leading this project were also my students during a summer school enrichment program where I did a trial run of my unit.
At the beginning of the school year I told the girls that we would be completing a novel study on Mockingjay and they requested a different book to read.
While the rest of the 7th grade reads Mockingjay, the girls will be working in a small group to complete a novel study on Unwind. In addition to comparing the novel to real life social justice issues, they will also be comparing Unwind to Mockingjay and discussing how the books handle similar themes in very different ways.
Working on this project will help to prepare these students for their future because they will have to set their own goals and pacing throughout the novel study. Skills such as time management and initiative are difficult for pre-teens and this project will help to give the girls a head start on developing these skills.
In Their Own Words
The goals we are trying to accomplish are to study a dystopian society and relate it to the real world. We are also trying to discover new forms of literature to expand our knowledge. We also want to read to our fullest potential.
We (with the help of our teacher) will bring this project to life by sharing our ideas and thoughts. We will sit down and discuss real life problems that many people face and how to solve them.
People in the real world have to deal with social injustice. With this project we will learn how to solve these problems that affect us and others around us. Some people our age group don't realize how serious these problems can be and how to solve them in a proper way.
