Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class currently consists of thirty-three, highly active students who are eager to learn and hungry for knowledge. Their reading levels vary from a student who has very limited English because he entered the country this year, all the way through late middle school / early high school. They come from a variety of backgrounds including Polynesian, Caucasian, Hispanic and African. One of them is a refugee and each of them has a unique background story.
My students are hard working; they know the meaning of dedication, perseverance and grit.
They understand how to face challenges. While in lower grades, they "learned to read" we are now shifting our focus to really "reading to learn". Learning is intended to be applicable to their daily lives and with additional reading materials, we can make "reading to learn" enjoyable.
My Project
These materials that I am requesting will allow us to move from the traditional model of "teacher stands in front of the room at the SmartBoard/whiteboard to teach" and move us into a realm of endless possibilities. I will be able to bring the SmartBoard/whiteboard to the student! The student will be able to show their work, talk about their work, and correct their work in real time and in front of the class for the benefit of all.
Student engagement will skyrocket as my students share their work in front of everyone without the pressure of standing at the front with "all eyes on them".
These materials will also allow for students to be engaged in personal learning. When students are working independently, the iPads will be tools to help students in both literacy and math instruction. We subscribe to several self-paced, net-based learning programs that have apps. Students will use the iPads to further their individualized learning on their instructional level! How amazing is that!
These materials will be great for research, too! Math, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies. The students can use an online translator and/or dictionary to help define new and unfamiliar words. Our math and language arts programs both have online components that students will be able to access on these devices! It is an exciting time to be a student.
