My students need building supplies! Blocks, blocks, and more blocks! We need a wide variety of building materials, so children can be exposed to hands-on problem solving and critical thinking using spacial awareness.
All children are special, that goes without saying. The population at my elementary school is one that is diverse and that I am honored to work with. We are culturally diverse, with about 25% of our kids speaking English as a second language. We are economically diverse, which can create it's own challenges. I have my own first grade classroom of 25 young learners who come to school each day eager and excited to learn! There are four first grades total and we do a daily switch, so we have the opportunity to work with all 100 first graders. Our focus this year is to encourage problem solving and engineering into all subjects and create strong critical thinkers!
My Project
Our children in today's world are exposed to a variety of screens and technology. They are often "plugged in," which is making math concepts of spacial awareness, critical thinking, and problem solving concepts suffer. Our first graders need more opportunities to build and create structures and designs. They need to see and feel the way blocks and shapes go together. We need to foster a love of engineering among this generation that spends so much time connected to a screen.
Using these building materials such as blocks, Magna-Tiles, K'Nex, and more, we hope to give kids engineering challenges to recreate castles from the fairy tales they are reading, build the tallest or strongest structure, construct bridges that can support a specific weight, and have the opportunity to bring their own creations to life.
