My students are some of the most compassionate and amazing people I know! I work with 10-12 grade writers and readers in a suburban school district. While my students do have many things because of the community support, we are missing a big piece that will only help them to be even more successful.
I teach writing and reading and for many of my students, they need a space that is conducive to create and explore.
Currently, my classroom is quite sterile and standard with tables and chairs, incandescent lighting, and a general lack of comfort.
I do have three comfy chairs that my students fight over daily. They rush to class so they can claim a comfy chair (discarded office chairs that are falling apart). They set up a rotation schedule and even rock-paper-scissors for them.
More flexible seating options and different lighting choices will allow my students to find a spot in the room where they can create worlds and escape to others through their reading and writing.
My Project
I chose three different types of flexible seating so that students have even more choice throughout the room as to where to sit as they write and read.
Regular seating options are not always the best choice for students as they work to create their best work.
By providing new, flexible seating options, my students can move around the room even more to find a spot that is perfect for them to create their pieces. My writers need comfortable choices in order to be put pen to paper and write. For some of them, it is the most comfortable and creative space they have in their lives and I want them to have even more options.
