The arrival of a package in the mail for a child (or adult) brings such joy and excitement. Combine that excitement with the opening of a new and diverse magazine, and you've inspired a reader. It my wish to help foster this kind of experience and love for reading.
My 4th and 5th grade students come from homes that are very limited in their capacity to provide materials that support learning.
The children are no less willing, interested, and excited to explore new resources & experiences that provide meaningful opportunity to grow as learners. They attend a lower socio-economic elementary school in California. They are wonderful kids!
My Project
In my experience as a teacher, I have committed myself to pulling relevant reading materials for my students. This has sometimes meant cutting the back of a cereal box, ripping pages out of a magazine, printing from online resources, and even photographing something that I knew might inspire my kids. Each time I have brought in something new and significant, I have witnessed the excitement that occurs within my students. Their natural curiosity takes over and real learning and application occurs. If my students had the opportunity to routinely receive Storyworks magazine, I am certain that this will only provide more exciting reading opportunities for them. We will use the resource regularly and link it to the genre studies, grammar lessons, non-fiction reading (which is lacking in our curriculum), and poetry experiences that are an everyday part of our classroom. It will provide a wonderful, personal resource that will entice their ability to read, grow & learn.
This is a wonderful gift, and that alone will be a life experience that will have lasting impact on my students.
They will have first hand experience with generosity and kindness. Additionally, you will help me to inspire a LOVE for reading. I had the great pleasure over 10 years ago (when budgets were a bit bigger) to receive this magazine in my classroom. I know firsthand how great it is, how it offers a diverse range of topics, and how much students enjoy reading it. Thank you.
