Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is composed of some highly motivated, hard-working eager learners, most of whom have the added challenge of learning language as well as academics (85%). Our school community is made up of 95% free and reduced lunch and 90% minority students. Every classroom is a high energy cauldron of excited learners that I have been proud to be a part of for the last 17 years.
Our obstacle is access not ability.
I want to give my students as many opportunities to enter the age of technology with the skills necessary to succeed in the future work force. This means providing an learning environment that fosters problem-solving and creativity.
My Project
Women and minorities are drastically under represented in the computer science field. On last year's AP Computer Science test, only 24% were women 7% African American and less than 5% Hispanic. This discrepancy is not due to ability, but rather exposure in the early years of learning.
It is essential for students to be given the instruction necessary to build the belief that computer science is a field open to them.
A field that needs their voice and perspective.
The Sphero is a programmable robot that students can develop their coding skills to operate.
