My amazing students live in a rural area, and more than half survive below the poverty line. My classroom is an inclusion class. This means that I teach students with disabilities along with their typically developing peers.
I learn as much from my students as they learn from me.
Despite the challenges my students face from learning difficulties, poverty, and living in the heart of the opioid crisis, they continue to have good attitudes. They are eager to learn. I want to fill their space with the tools that help them to have the same opportunities as children in more prominent areas. My students deserve every advantage.
Multiplication facts are an essential learning standard in the third grade. The students must spend a lot of time practicing the times tables. This can become boring if you only provide them with multiplication flash cards. I want to set the stage to engage.
We will unlock the magic to multiplication by using padlocks.
I will write the product on the lock and use the key tags included in this project to write the corresponding math equation. For example, the key that unlocks the lock that says 12, will say 3 x 4. The students can use this independently as a center to practice. They will know if they have the correct answer only if the key unlocks the lock. Then we will have group activities with these resources by having group challenges while playing the song "Unlock the Magic in Me!" This will liven up mundane multiplication and unlock the magic in my students. This activity can be used from year to year. Thank you for helping me to make math fun!
