Our school is located in a military base town, over 90% of our student population is active duty or affiliated with the marine corps. We have students transfer in and out from all over the world. We have a large number of special needs students from varied poverty demographics. We serve students with all levels of music abilities in all classrooms, 6th through 8th grade. I would not trade my wonderfully diverse mix of developing musicians for anything, they challenge me to teach music concepts that encompass all learning styles & abilities within my classroom. I believe in teaching the whole child & strive to challenge them to have fun whilst teaching valuable and memorable music lessons that encourage them to think on a higher level. The students get so excited when they grasp challenging musical concepts applying them in performance. The growth my students make from day one to the end of the school year is so rewarding. They learn dedication and discipline to hone and polish their craft. As a music educator I want to leave my students a legacy of independent musicianship & a love for choral music that integrates beyond all core subjects.
My Project
Implementing proper piano keyboards with proper keyboard stands and headphones into our chorus classroom will enable my students to work at piano keyboard stations and enhance their music theory learning and sight-reading skills. They can benefit individually as they learn at their own pace and as a class with group piano. Students who are engaged in reading music and playing an instrument will foster development of neural networks which involve engagement with both sides of the brain.
I believe in teaching the whole child and giving them opportunities to nurture dendrite development, hand-eye coordination and promoting 21st century learners that are life-long lovers of music.
Music is the universal language and I truly believe my students will be more successful with these tools.and your help!
