Unlock Student Imaginations with STEAM Building, Puppets, and Tactile Experiences.
Help me give my students Makerspace STEAM building items such as Lego and Zoob sets, for centers time, puppets for storytelling/creative play, and modeling clay to create characters for stop motion video stories.
Our school consists entirely of K-5 students with special needs. Many have autism and/or another significant developmental disability. Students come from all over the district, and many receive free and reduced lunch. Some also receive ESL services.
The school provides an oasis for students who need a calm and supportive environment in which to develop and learn.
The patience and expertise demonstrated by school staff serves to optimize students' learning and self-confidence.
Our library media center is in a portable classroom and funds towards this project would go a long way towards enhancing the student experience when they come to media classes. Many students have difficulty expressing their ideas verbally and in writing and therefore are in need of adaptive technology tools and resources to aid in research and content creation.
My Project
The building materials, puppets, and molding clay will allow our special needs population to create, play, and invent in the media center! Our students often need sensory and hands-on opportunities to express their creativity and tell their own stories. Traditional learning methods are not always a perfect fit for our diverse population and we need to find creative and varied ways to differentiate. I've seen some of our students, who have difficulty expressing their ideas verbally and in writing, express themselves beautifully through puppetry and dramatic play. These items will support and enhance their ability to share their many special gifts while addressing their sensory and social/emotional learning needs.
