As an educator in a low-income school district, I do my very best to expose my students to a world filled with possibilities and opportunities. These young adults worry more about supporting broken families than education. It truly has become a privilege to help open their eyes to a great big world where hard work can afford them a better life.
Sadly, too many of my students' concerns are about having a roof over their heads as opposed to their futures.
If I could help, in even the smallest of ways, give them the advantages other students have, this would mean the world to me.
My Project
Our job as educators is to help better the lives of our students, not just by teaching our content area, but by preparing them for their futures. Without question, my students would benefit immensely from having tablets readily available to them for purposes of research, critical thinking, and discovery. Most of my students do not have access to technology other than the limited resources our school district strives to provide. By giving all of the students who enter my classroom each year the opportunity to learn virtually, you are improving the lives of future generations.
Undoubtedly, my students would further excel in areas of writing, research, close-reading, discovery, and independent thinking by having access to the internet during our English class.
Being able to speak and write well is a skill that transcends all professions and a big component of our 9th grade curriculum is research. Preparing and composing a research paper is no easy feat and doing so with limited resources is even more difficult. If my students had the capabilities of exploring our virtual world during this unit, it would not only help spark curiosity but also allow them to master writing a research paper.
I cannot put into words how special and meaningful it would be to close the technology gap in my classroom. My students are so deserving of this and it would be a humbling honor to be able to share this gift with years of hard working students.
