I teach two groups of wonderful first-grade students. My students are in the Mandarin Dual Language Program (MDLP), in which they're immersed in Mandarin for half of their school day. Their ability to learn and speak a second language is one of many things that puts a smile on my face every morning.
My students are mostly English language learners from low-income families.
They are curious, hands-on learners, who need a lot of visuals, realia, and manipulatives to stay engaged.
My Project
My little first graders are beginning to learn about the world, and are tempted with too many wants. To help my students begin learning about financial literacy, it's important to start with something simple, yet so complex - the difference between needs and wants.
"But I need it" is what I hear from my first graders about the new fancy toy that they saw on television.
As my students are beginning to develop logical sense rather than acting based on their intuition, it becomes even more critical for them to learn the true meaning of needs and wants.
After a series of lessons on financial literacy, my students can go to the iPad center, where they have access to iPad games, such as Arctopia: Bryan gets FinEd, CreditStacker, and City of Dreams to continue to practice the learned concept of making wise choices with money. Through these fun games, my students will further practice and learn about what money is, how to earn, save, and spend money wisely. These games will further enforce the concept of needs and wants while helping my students make the right choices through fun games.
