Help me give my students personal weaving looms for creating various weaving projects, as well as an extra large classroom loom for creating large scale, communal group projects.
Our school serves a racially and socioeconomically diverse population. Approximately 50% of students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and 8% of our students are homeless. Despite these challenges our students arrive at school with enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. For most of my students, my classroom provides my students with their only chance to engage in artistic endeavors with materials beyond basic supplies.
Many of my students have primarily experienced art instruction that focuses on drawing and painting with basic supplies.
Some students struggle with drawing and painting and feel that they are not 'good at art'. My hope is that by providing my students with an entirely new medium, their creativity will be unleashed and they will realize that talent in the arts is as diverse as our student body.
My Project
During a unit on textiles and fiber arts, students will learn the skills and techniques needed for weaving. Students will each use a personal loom to weave a wall tapestry. Small groups of students will also work cooperatively using the extra large loom to create a large scale tapestry to be hung in the classroom or school hallway. The extra large loom will also be used for class demonstrations.
Exploring weaving allows students with a different skillset to realize that they are talented and can create excellent works of art using skills beyond those utilized in drawing and painting.
Help me to reach an entire population of artists who have yet to realize their talent!
