My students need one 8" dobsonian telescope to explore astronomical objects, a barlow lens for additional magnification, and a red LED flashlight to preserve night vision.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Looking for inspiration? These highly at-risk students have huge obstacles, challenges, and responsibilities. Yet they are coming to school every day to earn their high school diploma.
I teach high school math - Algebra, Geometry and Algebra 2. My students are in 9th through 12th grade. Our school's mission is to provide a second chance for youth to graduate from high school and continue through college. Most of our students have dropped out of other traditional or alternative schools at least once. Over half the students have children or are expecting. Of those who graduate, over 70% attend post-secondary education.
My students struggle with math. To make the subject more meaningful, I know they need mathematical experiences that go beyond lecture and worksheets. Giving our students memorable and interesting hands-on experiences has many benefits. It results in deeper mathematical understanding and more insight into connections between math and real-life, both of which we know better prepare our students for college.
For this project we request one 8" aperture dobsonian telescope with some accessories. With these materials we will enhance our math and science classes by holding weekly stargazing sessions connecting mathematics and astronomy. Topics to cover include scientific notation, solving equations, calculating focal length, dilations and magnification. More importantly, the telescope will make math relevant.
With your generosity you will give our at-risk students an educational experience through astronomy that will deepen their understanding of mathematics, help them graduate from high school, and bring them one step closer to succeeding in college!
