Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Our school is a K-5 Title 1 school with 100% of our students on free breakfast and lunch. In our low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom. They face dilemmas daily that include hunger, homelessness, anxiety, depression, grief, deployed parents, and much more. Despite the many challenges they face, I look forward to keeping things simple and providing them with creative and meaningful learning experiences in a safe environment. My students are creative, energetic, and have an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. As the School Counselor, I work with students primarily on character education, social/emotional development, college and career readiness, and financial literacy.

My Project

My students come from diverse backgrounds and are eager to learn about other cultures. It’s never too early to begin teaching students about diversity, inclusion vs. bullying, and multicultural differences and similarities. As a counselor, it is my job not only to teach diversity but to model appropriate inclusive behavior.

Our students will learn to embrace their cultural norms while discovering new and exciting things about other cultures.

Whether conducting small groups, individual sessions, guidance lessons, socializing during lunch or advising students during after school programs, I learn new things every day from my students about their various cultures.

My students are in need of new and engaging books, manipulatives, and games to stimulate their brains and peck their curiosity about different cultures. Books such as Teaching and Learning in a Diverse World, Getting it Right for Young Children from Diverse Backgrounds and What to Do About the Bully will increase student awareness about cultural differences and diversity. Manipulatives and games will be used for stress relief and brain breaks after intensive diversity and bullying discussions. These materials are vital for the social emotional development of my elementary aged students.

The requested resources will help my students develop a greater knowledge about other cultures, become more aware of diversity, and appreciate their own cultures. Additionally, these resources will decrease the occurrences of bullying due to lack of knowledge of cultural differences.

Your support of this project will help me deliver effective guidance lessons and weekly counseling groups to the students I serve. The program will focus on building an inclusive bully free school community, by focusing on multi-cultural differences, diversity, anti-bullying, and amazing acts of kindness.
