I love my first graders! My class is diverse and has bonded really well this year, even with all the unsettledness of COVID-19. There's one girl, whose face lights up like magic when she discovers new things. The other day she said, "I'm getting it! I'm learning to read!" There's another child whose strong personality and confidence inspire others to take chances and try new things. There's a boy who just joined our class from another county and is busy exploring every classroom resource with enthusiasm. There's another child, who despite medical issues and learning difficulties, continues to do his best every day and encourages others to do the same. And there are 12 more eager faces every morning.
My Project
In a time when we are all impacted by division, I want to give my students access to children's literature that promotes unity and diversity. The books I have selected are appealing to young learners and contain characters that resemble the students in my class (black, Hispanic, and white). They celebrate people and cultures and help children learn skills for acceptance and tolerance.
These books will enrich the classroom and promote a positive sense of how we are alike and different.
This collection of children's books will promote self-love and love for others, qualities that will stay with my students throughout their lives.
