My students are 6-8th graders who struggle with reading and writing. My students live in a low socio-economic area where 90% receive free or reduced lunch. Many of my students are English language learners or have been diagnosed with a reading disorder.
They must work harder than the average students to increase their reading and writing abilities.
My students have already created long terms goals, which all entail college. In their short terms goals they have stated their willingness to study harder, read more, stay focused and be organized.
My students need help with falling in love with writing as well as understanding how to write for a variety of genres. The books about writing will help my students develop the skills necessary for writing narrative, argumentative, and informational in an authentic fashion that uses trade books as well as full text articles. While students are learning how to write in a variety of genres, they are also practicing close reading strategies as they look for the craft and style of a variety of authors and then implement the author’ craft in their own writing. These texts will help students to practice a variety of writing styles without the pressure of feeling that there is only one way to write.
