My students need mess free clay, jewelry making materials, and portfolios. Both my special education and advanced art classes could really use these materials!
These classes consist of small groups of special students who either had to try out, or were recommended to join one of these two classes. They are for students who need extra individual time with me, that is difficult to get in a classroom of 30 other students.
Our students are unique and diverse and come not just from many backgrounds, but many different countries.
For many of them English is not their first language, but I have come to discover that art is a language we all can understand and they continue to impress me with their creativity!
My Project
One class is an art therapy class that was created for special education kids who struggle in a large class environment. It is my goal to have a separate art time in addition to their regular art class where they can create independently driving projects that allow them to feel more comfortable and creative in the art room to improve their experience in a large class setting. Model Magic would be a perfect way for these students to experience clay sculpture without creating an overwhelming sensory experience. My other class is an Advanced Art Enrichment class where students have to submit a portfolio and our teachers will choose 10 students to participate in this class where they can build and expand their portfolios to help in applying for high schools. They need portfolios to protect their artwork in a classroom with creativity spilling out on all surfaces!
Model Magic as well as jewelry making materials will make a difference in the lives of my special education students because it will allow them to create different individual projects that will not overwhelm them on a sensory level, and it will also challenge them to work with art materials in ways they have not before.
Portfolios will give our select Advanced students a sense of ownership and pride in their artwork, and hopefully will help motivate younger students to be creative!
