My students are creative and fun-loving young people! When they come into my classroom, my students' creativity can explode as they explore art through various mediums and projects.
I teach in a low-income/high poverty school district.
In the district, my school has the highest poverty rate, at 80%. Many of our families are struggling and as a result our student's experiences are very limited.
My hope is to provide them with as many experiences as I can through their art.
My Project
I have started using the TAB (Teaching for Artistic Behavior) approach to teaching art and have found in this first year of TAB that there are several things that I don’t have to successfully run a TAB classroom. The principles of TAB are: You are an Artist, This is Your Studio and What do Artists do? Keeping this in mind, I would like to enhance my classroom to give students a better studio experience.
In order to better students’ experience in my classroom, I am in need of more supplies.
Currently, in my classroom I have only four centers available for students to use: Drawing, Painting, Collage and Sculpture. In addition to these centers, I would also like to have Printmaking, Paper Making, Jewelry and Fibers. I have a few materials to start these centers, but not enough for the amount of students that I see each trimester. There are 735 students at my school, with over 75% of our students receiving free and/or reduced-price lunch. These centers have the potential to reach all students at my school. If I had the materials to open these centers, students’ study of visual arts would be greatly enhanced. Students would be able to have more choice in the materials that they are choosing for their projects. Through these centers, students would be able to experience other art forms, artists, and styles.
