Can you imagine not being able to learn the way everyone else does? Or not being able to communicate the way others do? What if you couldn't speak at all? These are issues you can help my students overcome.
My students are amazing!
They are hardworking and energetic middle school students, all with significant learning needs. Though they have many challenges, they put their best effort into everything they do. Students in my classroom not only work on academics, they also learn and practice life skills that will help them become successful, contributing members of their community.
My Project
Technology can literally change my students' lives. Having an iPad mini in our classroom will allow more students to access communication software, letting them participate in learning activities. Other students will use it to practice specific reading and math skills at their level. Additionally, many of my students need repeated practice with a concept before it is mastered; having an iPad mini will give them the practice without having to do the same boring worksheets day in and day out.
One of the ways they will use the iPad to practice life skills is in their cooking/shopping lessons. Students will create menus and shopping lists on the iPad, then calculate how much money they will need. They will use transportation apps to help them get to the store, and when they arrive the iPad will help them track their purchases. After returning to school they'll create stories and videos to share their experience with others.
Access to communication and learning tools that are specifically designed for them is essential for students with special needs.
They need an iPad mini to learn new information, practice skills, and share their knowledge. An iPad mini would allow them further access and engagement with the world around them.
