I am a first-grade teacher and a track coach for third, fourth, fifth, and sixth graders at P.S. 46 in Harlem. This public school in New York City has 88.5 percent of its children receiving free lunch.
I started a running team in this school three years ago. It has grown from seven children to almost thirty and continues to grow each season. With a lack of sports teams and arts in the community, the running team has become very popular. It promotes exercise, health, nutrition, and self-esteem in children who live in a generation of rising obesity.
I coach along with a second-grade teacher. We practice after school and race on many weekends, attending running events throughout the city. In February of 2004, a coed relay team consisting of a fourth grader, two fifth graders, and a sixth grader qualified to compete at Madison Square Garden in the Millrose Games. Almost seventy parents, families, and staff members from our school bought tickets to see them run on a Friday night.
Because the competition in the city is increasing and my team is growing, I would like to provide some nice team uniforms for the children. I feel that not only will proper uniforms help the children run faster, the uniforms will allow for more team spirit and cohesiveness. Our school colors are gold and purple. Our mascot is a jaguar. I would like thirty gold uniforms (running sleeveless tanks and running shorts). These uniforms can be in different sizes and embossed with purple/navy writing. The embroidery can depict the school name--P.S. 46 Tappan School, with a jaguar face.
