Help me give my students a copy of The Homework Machine by Dan Gutman. This book will capture their imagination, introduce relatable new characters, and encourage the love of reading!
My fifth-grade students have a natural curiosity and love to learn about a variety of topics. I love to introduce them to new concepts and ideas to get them thinking about their part in this world. When something sparks their interest, they will work hard to discover, create, accomplish, and share with others.
I want to motivate my students to work hard, to cooperate with others, and to believe in themselves.
Such skills will determine their future success!
Fifth graders are becoming more independent and responsible for themselves. More freedom and responsibility can be exciting but scary too! I want to guide them as they transition to being independent learners!
My Project
One of my greatest joys is inspiring a love of reading! It is wonderful to see kids fall in love with a book or find that special book that speaks to them. With the pandemic, loss of jobs, and online teaching this fall, it's harder than ever to get books into students' hands. They can't check out school library books or use the books in my classroom library. Many families that can't afford to purchase books. Online ebooks are just not the same experience and are expensive if I try to get multiple copies to use with my class.
During Online Distance Learning, I want to put real books into each child's hands!
I plan to teach a unit using The Homework Machine, an amazingly fun book by Dan Gutman. I need copies of this book to send home to each child so we explore this story, meet these relatable characters, and inspire their imaginations. I mean, you'd love a machine that does your homework for you, wouldn't you? What could go wrong?
Every year that I have used this book , my 5th graders have LOVED it! We have so many thoughtful discussions about the characters and the lessons they learn. The Homework Machine becomes a class favorite, and one that leads them to other similar books or more books by the same author. That's my goal, to hook them on books and the joy of reading for fun!
Please help make this happen! The love of reading and their imaginations will take them to exciting places if we can spark their interest now! The gift of reading is the gift that keeps on giving!
