Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a landscape of mountain ranges. Each mountain sees the world from a different view and each mountain is majestic and endearing in their own way. Just like every beautiful landscape, pictures never do them justice. I have the pleasure of being around them every day and seeing their creativity, perspective, determination, and growth first hand.
I love to see how my students see the world and how they handle struggle.
They are fearless and don’t mind learning from their mistakes. Their perseverance is one of the main reasons why they have fallen in love with origami. They love the feeling of figuring out a complex fold and creating something amazing with structure from a flat piece of paper. All of this I also see as they learn new strategies in our everyday math curriculum.
My Project
Help me create a culture where students want to trial and error, persevere, analyze diagrams, and have fun. The books will provide them with many different projects at many levels which will allow students to find something to succeed in, and the paper will be a huge step above scrap paper from the teachers lounge. All of these supplies will be kept in a designated Origami Station.
Origami is known to be good in the development of eye hand co-ordination, sequencing skills, spatial skills, memory, but also patience and attention skills.
Not to mention that Origami IS Math because it covers:
-Symmetry (the majority of origami patterns require symmetrical work)
-Measurement, Fractions & Proportions (are you making a fold 2/3 of the way up? or half way)
-Geometry (are you folding into a triangle or a square)
