My Students

Snorkeling. Scuba Diving. Who isn't excited to see what is underneath the surface of the ocean?

My students are an amazingly diverse group of urban Californian students who have been undereducated by the public school system.

When they enter our school, they have some of the lowest test scores in the district. However, we push our students to accomplish big things. My marine biology students are seniors who are interested in learning more about science and are taking my class as an elective.

My Project

My marine biology students are building submersible remotely-operated vehicles to explore what exactly is below the surface of local water sources. Although we received a grant which covers the physical parts of the submersibles, we need additional funds to actually collect data and interact with the underwater environment. My students will be creating their own submersibles and learning important concepts about buoyancy and structural engineering. In addition, they will be designing their own plan for underwater research which may involve collecting sounds, sights, and plankton below the surface.

Without these two underwater digital cameras, we'll have submersibles that can navigate through water, but no ability to actually see what is happening.

With these cameras, my students will have an amazing experience creating their submersible and then exploring an unknown world!
