Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Remember when you were in high school and how excited you were to apply to different colleges. Well many of my students are unaware of how easy it is to apply to a college nor do they understand their transcripts.
My student are high poverty and very diverse.
Two-thirds are on free and reduced lunch. It is always a surprise to me when I find that most of them don't own a computer and if they do, that they don't have Internet at home. Most of my students are first generation Americans and many of them are recently immigrated from another country.
My Project
I am making presentations in the classroom on applying to college. Many of my students have never looked at their transcript and if they did they did not understand it. I will print their transcript and then teach them how to interpret their credits, GPA and missing classes. Students will highlight the classes they need to take over as well as their missing classes. I recently acquired a computer and overhead projector and I need a cart to move them from class to class when I make presentations.
I have seven hundred students on my caseload and unfortunately Seniors are prioritized at the expense of the other grades.
I want to reach every student. I want to empower my students to understand the high school graduation process as well as understand what they need to do to get into college. Thanks for helping my students become high school graduate and college students.
