Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
These 5th graders come from a small town where sports are life. I work to expose them to the concept of opening their minds to new ideas, wanting them to learn about new ideas and deciding on their own what new ideas they can discover.
They are in the middle of a new movement and are the product of much confusion.
My goal is to provide them with concrete examples to help them really understand the world around them. I'd like to give them solid ideas so that they can feel safe to explore their own.
My Project
My students will be exposed to a variety of points of view regarding historical events. We will begin with our country's original occupants, the Native Americans. We will move through the exploration, colonization and creation of our country.
With these new books I can share more modern thoughts, images and perpectives with my students.
They will have better access to recent debates and findings about our country's history. With this more recent material my students will also be able to create better questions, connections and undersandings.
These new books will go a long way to foster the engagement students need to become more curious about our past. No longer will they think this subject is dry!
