My Students

Arriving from a smaller middle school, my freshmen students make the leap to high school finding themselves in the hustle and bustle that comes with having over 2,000 other students to work with and around. This may seem daunting at first glance and they may feel, at first, that their voices don't really matter. As they find their place here, they begin to timidly find ways to engage in our school and contribute to the culture. But what do I love about them? What makes them special?

They give me hope for a better future.

They inspire me. In fact, they teach me. They really do.

I witness them meeting new challenges head-on every single day. With nine 40-minute class hours, a host of club and athletic options, part-time jobs, and family obligations, these kids do it all.

Expectations for them are high! It's amazing they can accomplish so much with so little time to get things done, especially when many of the tasks asked of them come from adults who are feeling their own pressures and have different agendas than what many students have.

My Project

These materials will make a huge difference in my students' learning by giving them a more accessible text and a better understanding of the language used by Shakespeare. While Romeo and Juliet is a difficult text, No Fear Shakespeare provides a direct translation of the materials and the graphic novels will really help to scaffold my lower-level readers.

As they are able to easily follow the plot development, they can begin to understand the literary devices and overall meaning of the play!

We currently have multiple English 9 teachers, making it difficult to share copies of books. We also struggle with keeping books in good shape as they are used by so many different classes. Your help will allow me to keep the books in my classroom so they last longer for more students!
