Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a 4th/5th grade combo teacher at a school that reopened after a 7 year closure due to some foundation issues. The majority of the scholars come from lower to middle class families and qualify for the free or reduced-price lunch program. Many of the students come from broken homes, are foster youth, or have been temporarily displaced or are homeless.
Our school focus is to inspire our scholars to achieve academic and social success through a growth mindset while incorporating STEAM education.
Scholars are coming to our school with a variety of different social and educational backgrounds. Our goal is to develop a classroom environment that teaches every scholar they can learn and succeed. We want our scholars to learn the basics (reading, writing, and math) while developing the skills necessary to become productive citizens of our global society. Our goal is to create a school wide culture that includes staff, students, parents and the community.
My Project
Scholars need to be exposed to a wide variety of reading material in order to fully develop their reading skills. Through the use of Scholastic News and Science Spin, scholars will read about current events and news that is relevant and focused toward upper elementary student. Reading and analyzing informational text is an important skill that many scholars are lacking.
Scholastic's full color magazines will capture the readers attention while helping them to develop their reading comprehension and skills through standards based lessons.
Our curriculum is currently lacking a strong social studies and science component. These magazines will provide supplemental materials for reading and exploration. With the addition of resources from teachers pay teachers, students will be given the opportunity to apply what they are learning throughout other content areas.
