Understanding our Nation - Government and Geography
My students need these books and map resources such as Write & Wipe USA wall map, US Government Resource Box and US Government Literature Library, in order to learn about United States government and the geography of our nation.
Franklin D. Roosevelt's said, "We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future". Teaching my third graders about U.S. government and the country in which they live is such an important first step in helping them become active, engaged citizens.
I work in a Title 1 school with a very diverse student population.
I am very fortunate to work with very supportive, collaborative teachers. Each year I find my students are so interested in Science, Geography and History topics. I think it is very important to have fabulous resources to engage my students and encourage them to want to learn about these topics.
My Project
I plan to use the wall map as an interactive map where students can chart the movement of historical figures as we discuss how location had an impact on the lives of these historical figures. We will also be learning about major rivers in the United States as well as how to locate the Equator, Prime Meridian and lines of latitude and longitude.
The government books and games will be used as we learn about the political roots of our modern democracy. Students need a firm understanding of local, state, and national government in third grade. We will also learn about the branches of government, checks and balances and the responsibilities of each level of government.

These materials are reusable and will be saved from year to year. In primary grades, funds are often dedicated primarily to math and reading. To have these additional supplies to help enrich my social studies curriculum would be a wonderful gift to my students.
