My students come from a wide variety of places to call America home. They are English language learners from Bosnia, Bangladesh, Yemen, Pakistan, and Serbia. They are also American students, special education students, and overall, students with a drive to succeed. With the proper supports, they will be able to do so in their core curriculum. These students are hard workers whose families may lack the funds to provide our classroom with some of the essentials to allow for collaborative group learning.
As fifth-grade students, it is important for my students to rise to the occasion and succeed in their state testing, laying the foundation to help in their success as they prepare for middle school.
They are excited to learn and embrace the many opportunities presented to them in the American education system.
My Project
I teach a predominantly Muslim population of students who live in a predominantly Christian world. My students love learning about other students' and teachers' customs and traditions as we embark upon the holidays such as Day of the Dead, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Diwali and many more. I'd love to give my classroom more representation.
I want my students to feel understood and represented during their holiest month, Ramadan.
This is a difficult month for many students, because at this age, they often have begun taking part in their monthlong fast and prayer. This makes it challenging to get on through the school day, and to focus as many students are hungry. They are also excited because this is the time of the year when they have their biggest celebration, Eid. I'd love these decorations for our classroom so we can celebrate as we do all my other students' holidays. I selected a book to give each student as a gift when they have their Eid celebration.
