Understanding Life and the Importance of Insects

Help me give my students learn about life cycles of butterflies, ladybugs, and praying mantis so they can understand the importance of insects in our world.

My Students

My second graders are wonderful young ladies and gentlemen who work very hard to learn in our school. We have a flexible seating classroom so they have control and are able to move around throughout the day to seats at various heights. They live in a urban area and face a variety difficulties that hinder their learning including high poverty, special learning needs, and language barriers which they work together to overcome.

Our school is a 57 year-old public K-6 building and we make it work; the students learn to have pride in their accomplishments, in their school, and in their community through our hands-on learning practices.

Students come from our local community as well as our nearby Air Force Base and Army Reserve Center to learn in a setting where the students come first.

We need to show them that there is a better world out there just waiting for them to come and explore; a place for them to learn about life, their future, and how to make a better world through collaboration, problem solving, and taking a proactive approach to current issues.

My Project

My students are amazing when we give them the tools they need to be successful: patience, problem solving abilities, observation skills, data collection tools, and communication opportunities with peers and adults. The insects and materials will empower my students to develop these skills and more. They will care for the insects from eggs to release and develop a deeper understanding of life cycles in one insect while relating that information to other insects and animals. They will be able to communicate thoughts and observations to others in their class and throughout the school. Parents will also be able to take part in this learning since the habitats will be visible in classroom and on webcams. The scientific and communication skills developed will enhance all areas of learning for my students and other students in the school as well.

With hands-on learning, caring for these insects, and observing them, students will have more engagement to the learning process and develop higher level questioning skills which leads to more powerful thinking and will enhance all areas of academics.

The insects and materials purchased will be used in conjunction with plant life cycles and hatching chicken eggs. Please consider supporting this project and helping my students learn more about our world.
