This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I am the Media Specialist in an alternative high school, grades 9-12. The school has a population of students who are behind academically. Through smaller classes and more "hands-on" activities, our school strives to help students be successful. We define success as not only obtaining a high school diploma but also of going on to some type of post-secondary education.
The library media center has been in existence for the last four school years. Because of budget constraints, the school has not had the funds to purchase materials requested by our science teachers. One major area that the media center collection lacks is the ability to provide students the resources to study the causes and treatments of genetic disorders. The collection has none of those materials right now.
I would like to add nine books to the Media Center collection. These include several books on genetic disorders (in general). It also includes books on specific genetic disorders, including Sickle Cell Anemia, Color Blindness, Hemophilia, and Down Syndrome.
Better instruction in these topics will increase our state test scores, as well as better prepare our students for the college classroom. We would like our students to have the background knowledge necessary to be successful in their post-secondary educational pursuits.
The books provided by your donation will allow our students the ability to fully understand the concepts that are taught in the high school biology curriculum. Students will have a more valuable learning experience with materials that are available and accessible to them.
