Understanding Diversity: Using YA to Educate Future Teachers

My students need a class set of the books Wonder and I Will Always Write Back, so they can learn through literature about diversity in the classroom.

My Students

I teach sophomores and seniors in a high poverty school district in South Carolina. Despite the many obstacles that they must overcome, my students are kind, thoughtful, and full of energy.

My students are from different backgrounds and life experiences, yet we all come together in English class as one.

I am always looking for new ways to increase literacy and success in my classroom. My students have a desire to better themselves - they want to learn and grow, which makes me excited every day to come to work!

My Project

In addition to my other Literature classes, I also teach a very special group of Seniors who want to one day become teachers. This class, called Teacher Cadet, is a wonderful introductory course to the joys of a career in education. One unit that I often struggle with as far as materials is our Special Education and Barriers to Learning Unit. I feel these two titles will be perfect for my students to introduce diversity within the classroom.

By using contemporary YA literature like Wonder and I Will Always Write Back, I hope to inspire these future educators to understand and embrace diversity in their future classrooms.
