Help me give my students access to copies of our first Project Lit Book Club being launched this fall. We are requesting the titles for the first 4 novels we will study.
I am so fortunate to teach in a wonderful magnet-themed school of Arts and Humanities. We have such a dedicated staff that looks out for each and every student. It is a very diverse group of students with over 1/3 on free or reduced lunch. Our community is also very supportive with many outside services helping those students in need. Many come through the doors every morning bringing with them the obstacles they are surrounded by. It is my job as a teacher to bring opportunities to them so that they grow not only academically but as individuals as well.
My Project
Project Lit is about empowering students as leaders and readers, and the resulting enthusiasm for reading that builds both community and individuals. It’s about school districts and communities supporting teachers and “vibrant” libraries. By purchasing 25 shareable copies of each of our Project Lit. Book Club titles for this coming fall, we will launch our efforts to flood our school community with great books, champion and celebrate reading, and engage in monthly community-wide book discussions. By providing a group of students with popular, relevant books, letting them lead the discussion of these books, and providing opportunities to interact with these books outside of the school, we will create a positive energy that will increase students’ interest in reading, and, as a result, their abilities to read more complex texts. Due to their subject matter, these books also provide unique opportunities for staff, parents, and community members to engage in conversations with students on serious social issues and to increase the community’s cultural proficiency.
As a social justice school, the Project Lit book club easily integrates into our school focus of teachers, students, staff, and families joining together to explore social justice issues, creating a catalyst for important conversations and significant change.
Through these book explorations and conversations, we can continue to build a common vocabulary, a stronger sense of purpose, and awareness of our personal responsibility in the world.
