Help me give my students engaging texts about African American history and activists and events of the Civil Rights Movement. The lessons of tenacity, community, and nonviolent protest are enduringly relevant to our lives.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My fifth and sixth-grade students are smart, curious, funny, and enthusiastic learners. At our school, we combine inclusion and resource room environments to serve the needs of our diverse learners. When I design units of study, I gather a variety of amazing books around a theme at different reading levels to accommodate all students. This enables everyone to participate successfully.
My Project
These new books will support an interdisciplinary unit on the theme of nonviolent protest and resistance in African American history. All students will read a text about the life of John Lewis while learning about important historical events to support their understanding of the era. In small groups, students will read companion books about equally important change-makers that we will purchase with these funds. While reading, students will journal and write essays about the texts. There will be a creative culminating project in which students may choose to write and recite poems, create and perform a short play, or make an art project.
I hope these stories inspire my students to continue to learn, flourish, and make our society better for everyone!
