This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach two classes (ICT and general education) of 4th grade math through our newly implemented departmentalization. Many students enter my class viewing math as a dreaded subject. They express many concerns: "It's boring," "I'm not good at it," "Math is too complicated," "When will I use this?" and "Nothing ever makes sense in math." My response? "That's only because you haven't experienced math with me!"
Through hands-on exploration and real life math connections, I am proud to say that I am able to create a classroom full of math lovers.
My little learners become eager to start a new week and see what engaging activities I have planned. By launching a variety of projects, I am able to reach the majority of the students in my classroom. Nothing brings a smile to my face like hearing my students cry out, "No way, math is over already?" after dedicating 120 minutes to study.
My school's mission is to educate the whole student by integrating strong academics with the arts. In working to address the needs of the at-risk, inner-city child, we strive to build self-esteem and self-confidence in every youngster.
My Project
As a teacher, you learn that your classroom will always contain students of different academic abilities and learning styles. It is our job to create a classroom of young learners that understand the same of their classmates. A classroom of young minds that do not judge one another based on their learning process, but instead, applaud one another for their unique learning abilities.
The requested supplies will help my students be more open and accepting of students who learn in ways that are different from theirs.
Although students benefit from taking notes on traditional paper, some students absorb more information when given a dry erase surface and marker. Many students also learn better when they can go back and add to, or correct their work with an additional color; students will use the requested red and blue markers to do just that.
While some students find it easier to study from a book, others find it easier to study brief notes on index cards. The index card supplies will help students understand different ways that one may study, that no one method is better.
