it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a second-grade teacher in one of New York City's poorest schools, I understand what it is like to have limited resources at my disposal. However, it brings me great sadness to think that, somewhere in our country, there are students who are suffering many times more than mine are.
According to news reports of recent days, many of the poorest students and their families in the greater New Orleans area currently have no food to eat or shelter to call home. To make matters worse, they will likely have a difficult time when heading back to school, as so many families are displaced, penniless, and without resources to help their children succeed once they are safely attending again. This proposal will provide an easier transition for these students. Through your generous donation, it will allocate school supplies to a New Orleans school in dire need of financial help.
My second-grade class in New York City is to benefit from this as well (although the reward is more intrinsic for them). I plan to introduce a letter-writing unit in early September, and once they have learned to format and write letters, they will address their letters to the students of New Orleans and offer words of hope and encouragement, along with the school supplies that will be so greatly needed. This, I feel, will help instill in my students the capacity for human compassion and the desire to help one another during our worst and most desperate hours.
Your donation will be greatly appreciated, by both the children of New Orleans and New York!
