This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
Our school is lucky enough to be surrounded by the rich history of downtown Ithaca, NY. One of the amazing opportunities our location has afforded us is the chance to visit the site of a stop on the underground railroad. Our class, along with the fifth grade classes, has partnered with a professor from Cornell University to develop a hands-on, student-driven, learning experience relating to the history of the underground railroad in Ithaca.
These books will help provide students with a deep background knowledge of the underground railroad before we partner with Cornell to visit the site.
Our hope is that the children can develop an understanding of what Black people experienced during the era of the underground railroad and how that translates to today and the world around them. The books will generate meaningful discussions which will guide our discovery of local history and current events.
