My students need blood pressure equipment to enhance their understanding of anatomy and physiology.

"Under Pressure," performed by David Bowie and Freddie Mercury, was a hit of the 1980's. I'm trying to make Anatomy & Physiology a hit of my school.
My students are enrolled in an urban high school in Wisconsin.
Over 80% of students receive free or reduced-price lunch, and over 20% of students are enrolled in special education services. Each day, students come to school with issues spanning the entire spectrum, yet each are equally so interested in learning. Their curiosity and questioning of the natural world renew my passion for teaching, despite the stress of coping with difficult life situations. Like most kids these days, they are technology savvy and excel with hands-on learning experiences. However, due to the resources available in my school, we lack the materials that would support students in such ways.
These resources will be used during labs and lab practicals to enhance my students' understanding of the cardiovascular system. When I have taught this body system in the past, I was shocked to find that most of my students did not have much background knowledge-- especially when it came to the simple concept of circulation. When my students get opportunities to experience and breakdown natural phenomena, they become extremely engaged and quickly master the concept and skills. Through these blood pressure kits, a lot can be accomplished. First, obviously, they can measure each others' blood pressure. Secondly, they can listen to each others' heart beats. Lastly, they will be able to listen to breathing.
Many of my students aspire to follow health career pathways but do not get the experience in high school to explore the different areas.
Many of them only think of nurses and doctors but do not consider the other options--physical therapist, exercise physiologist, or athletic trainer. This class and these materials will enrich their current understanding of health and aid them with their pursuits.
