My students need 40 copies (a class set plus a few extras for loaners if a student has an extended absence or needs to catch up at home) of the book, Hidden Figures.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Getting middle schoolers to read can be a challenge, but students with a limited world-view, in rural NC, is even more difficult. Reading a novel with minority protagonists will certainly keep my students engaged and eager to continue reading about people like them.
This timeless story appeals to students of every ethnicity and gender, keeping them hopeful that if others can overcome obstacles then they can too.
I truly think that my students will enjoy following the path that this story takes us.
Our minority populations make up more than 50% of our demographic with more than 80% of the children on free and/or reduced lunch. Reading about characters much like them, who work together to solve some of the most complex mathematical computations known to man, in spite of their many differences, can be an eye opening, learning experience.
My Project
Gender and racial discrimination have been in the news constantly, lately, but are nothing new. With a large minority population and young women who crave role models in the sciences and technology, this incredible true story could serve as an inspiration to continue on into traditionally white male dominated fields.
Reading Hidden Figures with students who are just coming into themselves and looking to their futures could encourage potential world changers.
I am hoping to plan a cross-curricular unit with my science and social studies colleague to include this wonderful book in order to tie in content with the Civil Rights movement and the shattering of glass ceilings in women's careers. Studying the unsung heroes of the space program would be nothing short of inspirational.
