I work in a school for children that have autism. My job is to provide academics, social skills and sensory training to a class of eight students that have been diagnosed with autism. My students range from ages six-ten and are very inquisitive and eager to learn new things.
This year my students have been asked to be responsible for their materials by using their own desks. They love the idea of a desk and being able to control their things, but the desks they have now make it hard for them to focus. Our desks now are open on the sides and some are slatted on the bottom. The desks are also different heights, which makes it difficult when we move our desks in different shapes. During lessons, books, papers, pencils and other objects fall out or into other peoples desks and the students become distracted and upset. My staff and I have tried many different ways to keep belongings in the desks, such as lining the book holder with clear adhesive paper or construction paper, but it has not provided a consistent fix.
My students need desks that have enclosed book holders to help them maintain order of their things and focus on the lessons. This will truly allow them to relax and not have to worry where their books or papers may be. I also think that under the chair shelves will help with their organizational skills. Anything that does not fit in the desk can go under their chair.
Your support will make it possible fr my students to increase their organizational skills as well as maintain focus during lessons. They will be able to learn better and it will allow them to keep their belongings private from other students in the class. You will be helping to teach them important lessons, such as organization, privacy and responsibility, that they can use later in life.
