Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Mr. Simmons Garcia's class, The Pirate Crew of Room 35, absolutely loves coming to school. They are resilient, passionate, creative, and can not get enough books in their hands. Our class believes in student leadership and growing our minds together!
Our school is a Title I school in the heart of South Central Los Angeles.
80% of our students identify as Latinx and 20% identify as African-American. 98% are eligible for a free lunch.
Mr. Simmons Garcia is a true advocate of flexible space, student-driven learning, and empowering his students to take strong roles in the classroom. He believes in culturally responsive and critical pedagogies, and that his students aren't ready to learn with their minds until their hearts feel safe.
My Project
Many lessons include the use of a projector and I love being able to bring the outside world into our classroom! The only problem is that the projector I have must be 6-8 feet away from the whiteboard. This means I often have to move back and forth from the computer/projector setup to the front of the class. If you know 1st graders, then you know that every second of transitioning means distractions! Having a projector in the middle of the classroom also means that power cords and HDMI cables are running everywhere. An ultra short-throw projector means I can mount it on the wall and project from above the whiteboard and have the computer at the front of the classroom. This would drastically change the lesson and classroom dynamics.
