The elementary students I work with amaze me daily with their resilient hearts and desire to learn. Countless of them face hardships at home that grown adults will never experience in their lifetime. Over 90% of the students I see are "free and reduced lunch." As the only elementary music teacher in our district, I have the privilege of working with every K-5th grade student. My music room is a safe place for these young students to express themselves through music making. It is a place for all students to find success.
Just because the majority of my students are low-income, their access to quality learning materials should not be influenced by this label.
Please help me provide them with the music learning materials they deserve.
My Project
Currently there are eight ukuleles in my classroom. While this is a start, my students currently have to share one ukulele per small group. It has been wonderful to watch the excitement and happiness come from these young students as they learn about chords and song-writing. These ukulele instruments provide them with a new ability to accompany themselves. The one complaint students bring to me is that they wish they had more time with the instrument. They wish they had their own to use in class.
If each student had their own ukulele to use, we could use our time more efficiently and effectively.
Please help me provide each student with their own ukulele to use during class!
