Help me give my students 20 more ukuleles and cases so that our 5th grade classes that meet at the same time, are all given equal chance to learn the ukulele!
How many of you played a recorder in elementary school as your first instrumental music experience? After the experience was over, you thought to yourself, "I love playing musical instruments so much that I can't wait to learn another instrument that is probably even harder to get good at than this one?" I know, me either. Most students that are not actually living in the medieval times get excited about making the distinctly permanent timbre of the recorder more often. So I began offering ukulele soon after students learned the recorder, in hopes that it would find a different set of students I was not previously reaching. Each year, we've had more and more interest and 'spark' for learning the ukulele. Having borrowed a cheap and old set of them from the district, we've not had enough access to them to let our students flourish.
My students interest in playing ukulele has grown each year and since they want to practice more, we can't keep borrowing instruments; we need our own set!
We started purchasing them last year and only need 20 more to be able to teach two classes at the same time.
My Project
These ukuleles are being used to reach students that were not reached by the recorders. We will learn to play songs and will use the ukuleles at our concert later in the year. A few ukuleles will be set aside for students who have an extra interest in the ukulele but cannot afford one of their own to practice on at home.
After starting to purchase ukuleles last year, I've noticed that we've had twice as many students sign up for band this year!
Having ukulele as part of the 5th grade curriculum has definitely sparked more student interest in music this year than ever before!
