Help me give my students a class set of soprano ukuleles. With these instruments, they will be able to continue their study of music literacy in an engaging and practical way.
Our elementary school is incredibly diverse with students from all kinds of backgrounds. Our district encompasses several townships within its boundaries and includes students who live on farms, whose parents work in the city, about an hour away, and everything in between. Because we are located near a military base, much of our school's population is made up of children from military families. Our enrollment is always in flux and we work hard to provide a safe and nurturing environment for each student no matter how long they remain part of our family.
Our students are creative, hard working, and love to try new things.
They are resilient and good problem solvers. They love music and performing and expressing themselves in unique and interesting ways.
My Project
As 5th graders, my students have already spent time working with recorders and learning the basics of reading music. They were self-directed in their recorder lessons and learned how to read and play as they went through popular folk tunes. With ukuleles, they can move on to a more complex instrument and build upon their music literacy while still having the support needed to be successful. A class set of ukuleles can be used for the entire 5th grade at my school, and if kept in good shape and treated well, can be used by 5th graders for years to come.
