My students come from a low income, high poverty area. As a district we assist students and their families through various programs that meet physical and emotional needs. The students enjoy coming to school where they are loved and taken care of-both physically and emotionally-something that is not always provided for them at home.
My students don't have much but they love music and look forward to coming to class every day.
Funding is very tight so our music room could use some help to offer a more diverse musical experience. One of the highlights of the school year for my students is when they get a chance to play instruments and I would really like to give them as many opportunities as possible to interact with many different musical instruments.
Our instrument selection needs a serious upgrade as many of them are well used and some are even broken; yet we have no money to replace them. The students are excited for this possible opportunity and I can't wait to share future success stories because of this project!
My Project
I want to give my students the opportunity to experience a wide range of instruments. Right now they are only exposed to small percussion instruments in the lower grades and recorders in fourth grade. Many don't play instruments again until they are in band in middle school.
Playing ukuleles is a new and fun way to engage kids in music and it helps them improve their music reading skills.
They will also learn how to read TABs as well as gain a better understanding of major and minor, a concept that is difficult to teach with recorders. This project will be a great way to showcase how awesome our music students are!
