Our class is comprised of 32 diverse, inquisitive, knowledge-thirsty, and eager fifth graders in a low-income school in San Diego, California.
Despite the number of various life-obstacles our students face, they are excited about learning, they love to read, and they are curious about the world around them.
From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hoping to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
I try to integrate music into as many curricular areas as possible in my classroom. As a person who has played an instrument since I was in fifth grade, I value the role that playing music has on children. I have recently begun learning to play the ukulele through Guitars in the Classroom. I have brought my ukulele into the classroom, and my students love watching me play, learning about the ukulele, and having the opportunity to strum it.
One thing I would love to do is teach my students how to play ukuleles so that they sing, play, and compose songs related to what we are learning in class.
I recognize that music can have a tremendous effect on building classroom community, on student engagement, on building the relationship between reading and literacy with the connection of reading music and reading words, and on building the relationship between music and math. With the requested ukuleles, my students will not only increase their musical understanding, but learning through music will extend to subject areas as diverse as literacy, art, science, and social-emotional development.
These ukuleles are sturdy instruments that can be used year after year, providing joy and learning experiences for my students this year, as well as future students several years from now.
Help us out and you will help my students develop a lifelong interest and appreciation for creating beautiful music.
